Changes regarding minor’s ability to receive digital mail from the public sector
Minors who have a digital mailbox can no longer register to receive digital mail from the public sector. This is due to a regulatory change within Mina meddelanden, the infrastructure that municipalities, regions, and government agencies to send mail digitally.
Mina meddelanden is the digital infrastructure enabling the public sector to send digital mail to citizens. A change in regulations has now come into effect, preventing minors from registering their digital mailbox to receive mail from government agencies via Mina meddelanden.
What about the minors currently receiving digital mail from municipalities, regions, or government agencies?
- If the guardian has previously consented to registration in Mina meddelanden: Nothing will change. Mail from the public sector will continue being sent to the minor’s digital mailbox.
- If the minor was registered in Mina meddelanden without guardian consent: The connection to Mina meddelanden will be terminated, and mail will from now on be sent on paper to the registered home address. Guardians can no longer provide consent. The digital mailbox will not be deleted, it will still be possible to view previously received messages. Guardians who have not consentet will be notified through a letter.
All existing digital mailbox providers, including Billo, Fortnox, Kivra, and Min myndighetspost, are affected by this regulatory change. Minors can still register a mailbox with private operators to receive digital mail from private companies.
The reason for this regulatory change is to ensure that minors do not receive digital mail from authorities, municipalities, and regions without their guardians’ knowledge, thus reducing the risk of important information going unnoticed.
The Agency for Digital Government (Digg), which is responsible for Mina meddelanden, is implementing this regulatory change. The new rules take effect on December 11, 2024.
